ORGANISATION:

Philisa Abafazi Bethu is a South African NGO which was founded by Lucinda Evans in 2008. Philisa Abafazi Bethu has been fighting against genderbased violence and for the protection of women, children, elderly, LGBTQIA+ people and all persons in need. Since our founding we have rapidly grown and are now running an entire center that is a safe space for alle people in need that live in the townships and communities on the Cape Flats in Cape Town. Our projects now include an afterschool programme for children and youth, a women’s support group, two safe houses for survivors of gender-based violence (one for women and one for LGBTQIA+ people), a senior club, psychosocial services for survivors of abuse, a search and rescue team for missing persons, a baby saver, and a men’s café (for a detailed description of our projects please consult our website). In addition to these services we are running two organic gardens: one provides us with vegetables and fruits which we use to cook for our soup kitchens that serve food to our community (during the covid-19 pandemic, we catered for approx. 2000 persons per day) as well as a Mandala Garden which is a safe space where people can come and mediate, breath, and enjoy nature aware from their crime-ridden daily activities and environment. Due to our various projects and different angles in providing services for the well-being and safety of our community, we have become a safe haven and place of refuge for discriminated people on the Cape Flats in South Africa.
